A Positive Approach to Denture Care is Essential

When you come to Toothcrafters Denture and Implant Centre, you’re in good company. It’s estimated that more than 5 million Canadian adults (about one in four) wear dentures! With a positive attitude and proper denture care, wearing dentures can become as natural as learning to ride a bike.

If you’re a new patient, you probably have some questions about the dentures process. Please take a moment and view our frequently asked questions. If you don’t find the answer to your question here, feel free to contact us!

While you are sure to become comfortable with your new dentures over time, wearing them for the first time may seem a bit challenging. It may take some adjustment time in order to get used to the feel of the denture in your mouth. You may even experience some irritation or soreness at first, which is perfectly normal. But as your mouth becomes accustomed to the dentures, these problems should gradually go away. Over the first few days, you may want to wear them most of the time, including while you are sleeping. After this initial adjustment period is over, we recommend you remove your dentures before going to bed. This will allow your gum tissue rest and allow you the opportunity to clean your dentures at night with a tablet solution.
Yes, please view our importance of check-ups section. You’ve probably seen our denturists several times already in order to get the right fit. Now it’s up to you to continue to take care of your dentures. Regular dental check-ups are important for your general oral health and to monitor any changes with the fit of your dentures.
Your dentures may feel odd at first – and this is perfectly normal. You may even gag slightly once they are in. Your new dentures may feel slightly uncomfortable or even a tad loose until your cheek muscles and tongue learn to keep them in place. However, within a few days, they will begin to feel normal. With a little practice, you will be able to adjust to this initial feeling, and soon you will barely notice them at all! Once you’ve been fitted with your new dentures, you may notice excess saliva (the fluid in your mouth). Don’t worry. This is a normal response. For the first few days wearing your new dentures, try to swallow more frequently. Within a few days, your mouth will become comfortable with the dentures and the flow of saliva should return to normal.
Becoming comfortable wearing your dentures while eating may require a little practice. We recommend you start off with softer foods. You may notice that you can’t bite down quite as hard or chew in exactly the same way. Try taking smaller bites and chewing gently to prevent your new dentures from becoming loose. With a little practice and patience, you’ll be back to eating your favourite foods again in no time!
While you may find it difficult to speak when you first start wearing dentures, just be aware that this is normal. Many new denture wearers experience difficulty pronouncing “s” at first. You can correct this by practising reading or repeating words or by reading a book or a magazine in front of a mirror. We also recommend that you try biting or swallowing before speaking to set your dentures in position.
Keeping your dentures clean is an important part of complete oral hygiene. It’s important to clean off food particles or tartar build-up on both the acrylic tooth and the plate to prevent bacteria and fungus from growing. Turn denture hygiene into a daily habit. Here are some tips for brushing and soaking your dentures: Brushing Tips • Be sure to brush with a special denture brush and denture paste. Ordinary toothbrushes and toothpastes can be too abrasive and could damage your denture’s surface. • Brushing can help you remove plaque build-up, tartar and food particles. • Always handle your dentures carefully when removing them, as they can be very fragile. Dropping them even a few inches into an empty sink could break the denture base or a tooth. To avoid this, we recommend filling your sink with water when removing your dentures to brush them. Soaking Tips • Soaking your dentures every night or during the day can help you remove food particles from spaces between the teeth that brushing can’t reach. • Soaking can also help remove odour-causing bacteria. • Tablets are convenient to use and give dentures a more complete clean. • Because dentures are more delicate than teeth, it is very important to clean them by soaking them.
